Fierce targets set for ultra-low emissions vehicles

40% of the van market should be ultra-low emitting vehicles by 2030.

That's the fierce target for ultra-low emitting vehicles or ULEVs as proposed by the Department for Transport in its Road to Zero strategy, published this month.

Despite the industry being a leader in this technology, meeting the target will be hugely challenging, given that ULEVs make up just 0.3% of new van sales at present.

The SMMT says: "We are concerned about targets for ULEV penetration that go far beyond the high levels of expectation proposed by the European Commission for vans.

"Achieving 40% market share would require a nearly 144-fold increase in uptake from the current position of just 0.3%.”
